Frank Lampard is set to face his former club on Saturday as Everton host Chelsea for their opening Premier League match of the 2022-23 season. Thomas Tuchel's side will start their full first season under the new owner of the club, Todd Boehly while Everton need a new and fresh start after a difficult season last year, albeit one that ended in a positive way since Everton avoided relegation despite being at risk. Here's our storylines, how you can watch the match and more:

Everton: Lampard's side lost its best player in Richarlison who joined Tottenham over the summer and as things stand they still haven't really replaced him. As the manager himself said in the pre-match press conference, "We lost Richarlison, a versatile striker who knew how to perform well in front of the goal. We are aware of the area in which we need to strengthen the roster. We will play the first match with Rondon suspended, it is quite obvious that in attack we will have to look for some signings." That's especially true now that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be out six weeks as well.

Chelsea: It was a summer full of changes at Chelsea, after new owner Todd Boehly came in at the club and took charge of the transfer business. Tuchel's side lost Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger as free agents and then Romelu Lukaku went back to Inter Milan on loan until the end of the season. Chelsea then signed Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and then on Friday announced the signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton. It will be difficult to see all of them starting together at the same time in these first weeks of Premier League soccer but Thomas Tuchel will have to work to improve the team confidence as soon as possible after the summer revolution.

After a difficult previous season, Everton look to start the new one off on the right foot against one of the top sides from last year. Chelsea FC may have had ownership changes, but their team will present the same challenges as ever before to Frank Lampard and company; getting off to a good start will be that much more important for this team after the relegation battle of 2021-22.

The Toffees will be a bit shallow with Dominic Calvert-Lewin set to miss between four and six weeks with a recent knock, while Salomon Rondon will miss some time due to a red card sustained late last season. Hence, these Blues will be shorthanded against this Chelsea side, who they’ll hope continue to perform like they have across the preseason.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, we spoke to Dávid Pásztor, manager of SB Nation’s Chelsea blog, We Ain’t Got No History:

Thomas Tuchel feels Chelsea are this afternoon in good shape ahead of the new season with Marc Cucurella having just been registered in time to face Everton.

The £62million signing from Brighton was at Cobham Training Centre and trained after beating the 12 noon Premier League deadline.

He will train ahead of the trip but is likely to be on the bench with fellow new signings Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly expected to start.

It isn’t known if there are any injuries among the squad but a favoured starting lineup began to emerge over pre-season.

The attack will be built around Sterling who mostly lined up alongside Kai Havertz and Mason Mount in pre-season.

Even though the Blues did use a back four in pre-season, they will probably continue with their preferred 3-5-2 formation.

It will be a host of the usual names from the senior squad alongside the two new signings with Cucurella likely on the bench.

Returning loanees Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher will also surely be left on the bench.

Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Mendy; Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Koulibaly; James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell; Mount, Havertz, Sterling

The Blues come up against Frank Lampard’s side for the first time since their 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park towards the end of last season.

The victory for the Toffees helped them narrowly escape relegation last campaign, with them looking to build on this under the former Chelsea boss.

With the additions of Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling this summer, Chelsea will be looking to build on their third placed finish of last season.\

Thomas Tuchel’s side lifted the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup last campaign, while also reaching both domestic cup finals despite suffering defeats to Liverpool both times on penalties.

With Chelsea facing Everton to start their campaign, it was previously unclear as to what kit would be worn by Tuchel’s side.

So far, only the home kit for the 2022/23 season has been unveiled at Stamford Bridge, which would have clashed with Everton, who also play in navy blue.

However, Chelsea confirmed their away kit for the season after unveiling Cucurella, who donned the white kit in his announcement after signing for the club.

With the kit available for purchase from the end of August, Chelsea will now be wearing this against Everton in their first match of the season.

Chelsea’s official website revealed this information, as they also unveiled the kit in an article rather than a more traditional announcement.

Describing the kit, the website wrote: “In a continuation from this season’s Nike home kit, our new away strip pays homage to one of the most important figures in the club’s history, Ted Drake.

"Chelsea will wear our brand new 2022/23 away kit at Goodison Park.

“Key design elements of the kit see the return of the popular white base colour, most recently seen during the 2019/20 season.

"The unique lion pattern that appears on the collar of the home kit now features as turquoise stripes across the away kit.

"The inner neck design includes ‘Chelsea FC, London’ - a tribute to our city.”

Chelsea fans will get to see their new strip in action, with the Blues returning to their home kit when they face Tottenham Hotspur on the second game of the season at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel’s side will be looking to compete at the top end of the Premier League once more, with the season edging ever closer.afcsgrrtf
